What does group Group Therapy mean?
A lot of the time when people ask “how are you?” in day-to-day life, they really mean “are you capable of the task at hand?”. People in your Therapy Group genuinely want to know how you are. Group members are generally impressed by the growth they achieve with the help of Group Therapy. Meeting a new body of people may feel frightening, however, group therapy supplies different experiences from one-to-one therapy.
People have different personalities and backgrounds, and they look at situations in different ways. By seeing how other people tackle problems and make positive changes, you can discover a whole range of strategies for facing your own concerns.
Groups can act as a support network, a sounding board and provide a contained way of seeing ourselves, others and how we interact. Group members are a fantastic source of inspiration, and you’ll be affected by other people and affect others.
Talking and listening to others helps you put your own reality in perspective. Many people experience difficulties, but few speak openly about them to people they don’t know well. Often, you may feel like you are the only one struggling — but you’re not. It can be a relief to hear others reveal what they’ve been through, what they’re going through, share your experiences, and understand you’re not alone.
Open groups or Closed groups?
Open groups are those in which new members can join at any time. When joining an open group, there may be an adjustment period while getting to know the other group attendees.
Closed groups are those in which all members begin the group at the same time. They may all take part in a 16-week session together, for instance. However, if you want to join a closed group, you may have to wait for several months until a suitable group is available.
Group therapy and individual therapy?
Yes! Sometimes it’s helpful to participate in both group therapy and individual psychotherapy. Participating in both types of psychotherapy can boost your chances of making valuable, lasting changes. If you’ve been involved in individual psychotherapy and your progress has stalled, joining a group may jump-start your personal growth.
