Shorter term therapy can appeal to individuals due to direct focus on specific solution seeking, as well as defined investment of time and cost for clients. Some therapeutic motivations are a client’s desire for solutions to obvious distress, such as relational conflicts (e.g., significant other, family, or employment), wanting to modify unhelpful behaviors and starting to address intense anxiety or depression. Treatment goals place emphasis on solutions to your problems or emotional suffering rather than deep exploration of their beginnings.
Typically, timeframes are three to six months with sessions are once or twice per week, and the frequency is determined by a client’s urgency to work on the presenting issue. The goals are specific to the presenting problem. Less session time is spent discovering “why” you have this problem and more time is spent on helping you find a way to objectively define, consider your internal and external resources, and navigate towards your desired solution.

We will be less interested in things like “fault” or “blame,” “right or wrong” and more focused on how you can effectively deal with, manage and solve your problems and emotional suffering. Always, the primary focus will be oriented toward positive solutions. Treatment is less on “why” and more on “what”. We will work together to find solutions to your distress and emotional suffering. Therefore, expect that I won’t give “advice” but that together we will help you find your own solutions to your problems. It’s your life not mine, and you will identify the possibilities, not me. We’ll create solutions that make sense to you. You are an equal and effective participant in the work of solving what’s troubling you.
Symptom relief and deeper self exploration do not have to be mutually exclusive, and both can be addressed in the brief counseling that I offer. This therapy can also be a good starting point for someone new to therapy. Many times after completing brief counseling, clients decide to continue with a long term deeper psychotherapy approach.
- One-to-one sessions of Brief Therapy are available for individuals 20 years of age and older.
- Sessions can be conducted in person at a therapy room in Wellington CBD or online.
- Each session lasts for 50 minutes of face-to-face time, which provides me with 10 minutes of notes, reflection, and further treatment direction planning. That’s not to say you and your needs won’t occasionally be considered at other times; however, this is the allocated time to allow for consistent treatment.
